Public individualism

Public individualism

In this performative action, I wanted to emphasize the existence of individual freedom within the public space of a single individuality.

By means of blocking a pedestrian zone in the old town of Tallinn, an attempt was made to analyze the extent to which an artificially placed obstacle could limit people in their actions specifically, their freedom of movement.

I was interested in questions concerning the actions people might take when faced with an almost invisible and logically absurd border. Would they obey the given situation, or would they take steps to destroy this ephemeral plastic tape?

It is no secret that individualism is the opposite of the collectivism in which post-Soviet republics existed for many decades.

Nevertheless, we seek to protect individualism in those areas where it is necessary to prevent state violence as well as the dominance of the public over the private sphere, thereby reducing the total amount of potential violence to a potential minimum.

By challenging these boundaries, the work explores how heightened individual awareness might reduce systemic violence to its absolute minimum.
