Depth critical artistic analysis of the surrounding reality presents sometimes surprising circumstances.
We are talking about the situation which has arisen at the time of one discussion, between us (authors of the project), it was a question about trauma and the subsequent transformation of this experience. Our constructive discourse affected by armed conflicts. During the discussion, we suddenly discovered an interesting confluence of facts and situations related to our grandfathers.
It was found that between 1941 and 1942 on the front line separating Soviet army from the Japanese army in the Sakhalin area was in one line of the front, only on opposite sides. It turned out that they were both responsible for communication in their armies. At one point we even imagined that they could hypothetically watch to each other through binoculars from their trenches waiting for the command to go on the attack against his adversary. They existed in direct communication with each other as the observer and the observed object with a certain degree of partiality and responsibilities of observation. It happened that over the years the descendants of potential enemies transformed into creative tandem, which is in some way responsible also for communication only in the social field and uses different means to achieve goals. In a place of the more aggressive, ideological gust came a critical analysis of art and subsequent reflection on the occurring present by means of a variety of artistic media.
Through the implementation of a video installation «Sakhalin» we have tried to identify ourselves with our grandfathers. By means of compressed narratives we have demonstrated not just our attitude to this situation, but also tried to ask some questions our self and the audience such as does under natural conditions observer, does not affect the process under study or the presence of the action itself is already an integral part of the impact? How is the observation able to change the behavior model of communication between people? It is necessary to understand that the situation when the subject is under observation, it may be for him or her close to the stress, and how it may subsequently affect his or her daily life?
